15 Professions That Make the World Go Around- Yet They Get No Thanks
In the contemporary digital landscape, where influencers and celebrities frequently occupy the spotlight, there exist certain professions that work diligently in the background, shaping our world for the better. These vocations unquestionably warrant our highest esteem and regard. An online community member posed the question, “Which profession earns your limitless respect?” According to the responses from users, these exceptional professionals are truly deserving of our appreciation.
1. Hospice Workers
Many users believe that these workers are angels on Earth disguised as humans. Someone wrote, “ I can’t imagine anyone getting into such a line of work for any reason other than pure altruism.”
“I asked a hospice how he does it. He said that he was just helping them comfortably move from one stage of their life to another, better one.” Another added.
2. Sanitation Workers
These very people keep our communities healthy and functioning smoothly. A user said, “I’m primarily a glazier(glass guy), but I did wastewater treatment and was a plumbing supervisor for the Coffield Penitentiary. I respect you guys so much. No job pissed me off as much as dealing with getting sh** showered on me in the morning and being unable to wash off until I went home properly.“
3. The Hospital Housekeepers
You cannot have healthcare without a clean/sterile environment, so these are the unsung heroes of society. A nurse said, “It’s a thankless, underpaid, miserable job, but critical to patients’ health and well-being.”
“I have the utmost respect for janitors and housekeeping. Those places could not run or exist without you all. The hardest-working folks, and typically the best-natured.” Another user added.
4. People Working in Nursing Homes
These people also deserve tons of respect and decent pay, as they are severely underpaid (depending on their role). Someone commented, “I love my elderly residents, but wish I could live a bit more comfortably financially.”
5. Electrical Lineworkers
Putting their lives in danger to keep our lights on, these people are real gems. A user commented, “I saw a man who almost lost his life while changing a transformer right after Hurricane Ian. During the hurricane, 42,000 electrical workers stood by and leaped into action the morning after the storm. Within 2 weeks, most people got their power back!”
6. People Who Investigate Child Abuse Cases
These people work in law enforcement, child protection, and advocacy organizations. It must be an incredibly challenging and emotionally draining job. A user said, “Friend of mine was a cop in the se**** crimes division. It was rough. She transferred to the highway division after 3 years and still has nightmares.” A tough but equally necessary job we are thankful people take on.
7. Agricultural Field Workers
They do truly skilled work, and most people would starve if it weren’t for them. Someone said, “I worked a summer managing several crews in the Sacramento Valley, and the field workers were the hardest working people I’ve ever worked with. Zero complaining, always early, and they followed all instructions.”
8. Special Education Teachers
Teachers, in general, deserve all the respect, but SPED teachers are on a whole new level. A mother said, “I adopted 2 delayed children, one of which is ASD and ADHD (both under 5). These teachers are saintly ! Their jobs are hard, but they constantly communicate with me. It is inspiring but outrageous at the same time that these people aren’t making 6 figures a year.”
“Not just them but their aides. My son is autistic, and his aide is wonderful.” Another user said.
9. Social Workers
A user said, “Dear god, the things they see are soul-crushing sometimes and for (often) poor pay and little recognition for their work. Love them.”
10. Mental Health Professionals
While most health professionals are loved and recognized worldwide, mental health professionals are sometimes forgotten and underappreciated. Someone said, “ It’s a privilege to do our job. Hearing anything like “I’ve never talked about this before” is incredibly humbling, and I am honored to be in the therapy room and do this work.”
11. Merchant Seaman
“People who think products simply appear in stores don’t realize that 90% of the world’s traded goods are moved by sea. It’s a difficult, dangerous, and undervalued job, and the world economy would collapse should the sea lanes be threatened by conflict or natural disasters.” A user said.
12. Veterinarians
They get paid less and must listen to people whine that they “don’t care about animals” and “they’re only in it for the money.” Also, veterinarians providing euthanasia services are exceptional beings. Someone commented, “I can’t imagine putting beloved pets down all day, every day. But giving my doggo the gift of losing life in my bed instead of a cold, sterile vet’s office was an unspeakable gift.”
13. Waste Collectors
A user said, “We must respect garbage collectors lest we be buried in our waste.”
“Garbagemen, janitors, custodians, etc., are the backbone of our society.” Another user commented.
14. Workers Involved in Construction
Someone wrote, “I used to represent many of these guys in workers comp cases, and it was brutal. Guys in their mid-40s with totally broken down bodies, in daily pain, some barely ambulatory. It’s crippling work even if you don’t have some discrete workplace accident but also so critical to a functioning modern world.”
15. All Service Providers
Without our grocery clerks, baristas, and cooks- we would all be out of luck on the things that we often take for granted.

Let us recognize a fundamental reality: within each of us reside idiosyncrasies, rituals, and cherished delights that we frequently safeguard, shielding them from the inquisitive eyes of the world, possibly hesitant to openly acknowledge their existence.
