15 Things in Life That Can Quickly Become Addictive
From innocent hobbies to irresistible desires, we all nurture obsessions that infuse joy and entertainment into our lives. However, adhering to the age-old adage that excess of anything, even seemingly harmless indulgences, can be harmful. Recently, a curious member of an online forum posed a thought-provoking question: “What’s your non-drug addiction?” In response, users have courageously shared their most consuming and captivating obsessions, baring their souls in the process.
1. Scrolling Through Social Media
Despite its drawbacks, scrolling is a powerful obsession that consumes people’s time and energy.
A user said, “Social media wastes precious time. I could be making jewelry or playing with my dogs. Anything is more productive than arguing endlessly with a stranger about something that doesn’t even matter.”
2. Food
According to the online community, food addiction is a real struggle for many people. And it’s not hard to see why. Who can resist digging into a delicious meal, snack, or treat? A user wrote, “I feel this in my soul. Some days it feels like I just live to cook for my wife and me. I just love cooking and eating so much.”
“It’s super tempting to enter an excellent buffet and stay there all day.” Someone added.
3. RuneScape
Another obsession that users came up with was RuneScape. The fantasy role-playing game that keeps pulling you back in like a gravitational force you can’t escape. A user stated, “Every time someone says that they’re quitting RuneScape, I always respond “see you in 6 months!” You can never get away for good. It will always catch up with you eventually.”
4. Screens
According to a user, screens have become an undeniable obsession for many people. It’s all too easy to get sucked into the endless scroll of Reddit, YouTube, or the captivating gaming world when there’s nothing else to do. Additionally, there are plenty of shows and movies to binge-watch the moment you get bored.
5. Sleep
In a world filled with endless demands and constant connectivity, numerous users shared their unhealthy obsession with sleep. A user said, “I slept a little over 13 hours last night. Sleep is an addiction to me. But my body hurts sleeping like that.”
Another added, “I Slept through 8 hours of the day and woke up not even knowing where I was. I wasn’t even ‘rested.’ I reckon I could have turned over and slept for another 8 hours.” Wow!
6. Sugar
Sugar addiction is accurate, and it affects more people than we think. Sugar stimulates the brain’s reward centers, triggering pleasure and making you crave more.
Someone wrote, “I was addicted to the sugar and vanilla creamer I put in my coffee. I Discovered this when I started getting extreme migraines when I tried to switch to black coffee to lose weight. I was experiencing sugar withdrawals.”
7. Carbonated Beverages
Carbonated drinks like soda have long been considered unhealthy and highly addictive. A user stated, “I specifically avoid having soda in my house because of this. We get sparkling water to feed this addiction.”
8. Plants
A user stated, “Someone gave me a plant a few months ago, and I never imagined how much joy I could experience watching the thing grow. If one plant makes me this happy, then more plants equal more happiness, right? I’m at a couple of dozen now and still don’t have a definitive answer.”
9. Music
Many users believe music is life and something they can’t imagine life without. Someone stated, “Everywhere I go, I listen to music. At home? I listen to music. In the car? I listen to music. At work? I listen to music. My choice of entertainment? Listening to music!!”
10. Working Out
According to a user, “Working out is the highlight of my day. I look forward to it, and once I’m done it kinda makes me sad. Lead[ing] to me skipping rest days. Lead[ing] me to injures because of my over training.” Regular exercise is important, but so is taking adequate rest of cross training days.
11. Reading
Someone wrote, “I can read for hours non-stop and sometimes without sleeping if I like the story.”
“I can relate to this. I’m currently at work, too tired. After all, I went to bed at 4 am because I couldn’t put down a book.” Someone added.
12. Painting Nails
A user said, “I am obsessed with painting my nails. It makes me feel pretty for very little effort and cost.” Why not? I’m not sure there’s such a thing as too much nail polish- but maybe so if it’s causing debt to buy it or go to a salon?
13. Yarn
Crocheting and knitting enthusiasts admit they buy way more yarn than they need “just in case.” Someone writes, “Buying yarn. And occasionally crocheting with it.”
14. Wasting Time in the Name of Unwinding
After a long day, many of us spend a long amount of time scrolling or binge watching TV- while it may feel good to “veg” out- the reality is that these activities aren’t truly giving our brain the break it needs like exercise, meditation, reading, or listening to music can.
15. Staying Up Past Bedtime
Inside some of us, there’s seems to still be angsty teenager that doesn’t want to go to bed just to prove a point. Getting distracted and never sleeping is a recipe for disaster- yet people do it all the time while getting sucked into all of their other addictions listed above.
